From the Next World, the film legend Marlene Dietrich spoke frankly to spiritual teacher, Stephen O'Brien; as recorded in this short edited extract from his book Angels By My Side..Marlene and Stephen first met in the 1970s after one of her world-famous cabaret shows. He never imagined they'd meet up again, but they did - only this time she was now living on the Other Side of Life. Short Book Extract (Edited): She was seated on a large padded sofa, with her legs folded underneath her, and her voice and mind reflected a great sense of her own presence and magnetism. 'My dear, I didn't give a damn about what people thought about me: I did what I wanted to do,' she said, 'because I wanted to do it. 'Life is for living, and I lived it to the full! If I felt attracted to someone, gender didn't matter at all; I made love to them, and loved them completely because I followed my true self, not convention. But,' and she waved a cautionary finger in my direction, 'although I was highly sexually driven, love mattered the most, my dear. 'Gender doesn't count; love the person; celebrate the body and the mind. What are the alternatives? Indifference, or hate; and who needs those? When she spoke of her family, anger flashed across her eyes. 'They photographed all my private things, my stuff. I was annoyed; it really made me angry, at first - but then, what the hell? I can't hide forever - no one can.' I agreed. She stared rather vacantly out of the windows, a renewed woman deep in thought. 'I never believed in surviving death, you know,' and she cast me a glance over her shoulder, then resumed her stance peering out of the picture windows at the grasslands. 'But we live and learn. Now
now I think there is a growing belief in a God within me; an overseer...' She gently inclined her head of long golden hair towards the fields and the pageant of nature, then sighed to herself. 'The picture of my face will remain, I think, but I'll be doing some hard work here, ground-work, to promote the idea of love - true love in all its forms, just as soon as I settle in
