Short Book extract (Edited): I want my wife to know that I've survived. I made a promise once to her that if life continued beyond the cold grave, I'd be back to say so; and I'm back. My wife is Joan... Pause… My speech is difficult… of all the roles I played, this is the greatest of all. When I died I made the most spectacular entrance in my whole career. I entered an eternal world, and fell into the arms of my former wife, my dear, dear Vivien. She's beautiful; she's taking care of me. And I want Joan to know that I will meet her when God calls her name to join me here. I want Joan to know I'm near, and I love her very much. I'm not dead, I'm alive, and I'm finished with make-believe, and I've just begun to live. Vivien is so kind. Tell Joan, Joan Plowright, my darling wife, there's nothing to fear: there's light, not darkness. She'll understand… |
